End of Year Recap: 2024 91Ļć½¶app Student Awards
Itās time to look back at the exciting year thatās been.
In 2024, University of Canberra students from a range of disciplines were given prestigious awards from a number of independent institutions. Hereās our round-up of the winners.
Hayden Scott ā Bachelor of Pharmacy
University of Canberra student Hayden Scott was awarded the āPeopleās Choice Awardā at the PSA Viatris Pharmacy Student of the Year competition in August.
Mr Scott represented the ACT in the Student of the Year category and won the award thanks to his performance in a mock scenario in front of a live audience. The scenario involved assisting a customer coming into a community pharmacy setting.
āI love pharmacy because itās an accessible way to help people and it is a profession that is constantly evolving,ā he says.
āPharmacists are always learning about new medicines and the management of medicines for consumers, and weāve seen the evolution of vaccination and prescribing trials being delivered through pharmacies.ā
Jackie Lockley ā Bachelor of Pharmacy
Bachelor of Pharmacy alumni Jackie Lockley won the 2024 Early Career Pharmacist of the Year award.
Ms Lockley graduated in 2019 and has spent the last four years working in community pharmacy in the ACT.
Throughout her career, she has worked to reduce the stigma around self-harm through the establishment of Self-Harmers Anonymous Australia, and volunteers with the Salvation Army
āI love my job and I just want to help others,ā Ms Lockley says.
āI believe that the majority of us pharmacists genuinely care about the health of our community, and everything I do is just my way of giving back to the profession I love.ā
Ronan Richardson ā Bachelor of Information Technology and
Lucy Staines ā Bachelor of Business and Bachelor of Information Technology
In February, students from 91Ļć½¶app received awards for their contribution to the Innovation Central Canberra (ICC) Summer Intensive Program.
The 10-week program enabled 91Ļć½¶app students to work on real-world issues and develop solutions alongside industry partners.
Students Ronan and Lucy were awarded the āMost Effective Technical Solution Awardā at the ceremony for their innovative idea.
The two built a digital healthcare suite that helps streamline patientsā medical records. It also assists medical practitioners by providing medication history and a wide range of patient management tools.
Alyssa Fitzgerald and Mandy Wells ā Bachelor of Nursing
In October, the two Bachelor of Nursing students were awarded the inaugural Audrey Thew Scholarship ā which provided them with $5,000 each to recognise their high performance and support them during clinical placements.
āIām so grateful for this opportunity,ā Ms Wells says.
āThe scholarship means that I can experience another rural placement, which is what I really want to do, and the extra financial support will help cover the cost of spending time away from home.ā
Anika Novak ā Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication Design)
Bachelor of Design (Visual Communication Design) student Anika Novak won the 2024 Faculty of Arts and Design Illustrative Typography Car Wrap Competition.
The competition allowed design students to work with real-world clients as part of their studies. Students received a design brief for a car wrap concept, and the winning design was printed on a BMW.
āOpportunities like this are one of the main reasons I chose to study at UC ā you get to work on real-world projects,ā Ms Novak says.
